Heading north….

Whilst there is so much to see and do in the French Basque country we do have to move on! Our next stop is Payrac in Lot.

Today is another public holiday! Very good for us, making progress. The roads were quiet, the towns and villages mostly deserted. Time to take a quick photo at a roundabout, of which there are many…

Pantagruel’s Chair… This chair is at Chalosse, the centre of the French furniture industry. This amazing sculpture belongs to the nearby town of Hagetmau. This giant chair (5mx5mx10.6m) and appears out of nowhere. It is a holiday because it commerates WWII Victory Day (la fête de la victoire, le jour de la libération) a holiday to celebrate the end of World War II and the French people’s freedom. It is the anniversary of when Charles de Gaulle announced the end of World War II in France on May 8, 1945.

We spent two hours travelling through forest then another hour admiring vineyards and fields of soft fruits… dispairing of either food or public conveniences. Then we happened upon…..

La Restaurant in Montclec…. only to find lunch was finished…. Then, voila, Monty, son of the owner, worked his magic and the chef produced the most amazing meal from leftovers!

An amazing place. Monty is the son of the owner, Rosie, from New Zealand and his dad is English. He had the most defined English accent but spoke fluent French! Was educated tomA level equivalent in France, took a gap year and is now front of house in a thriving restaurant/wedding venue.

Like many other villages we passed through it was deserted and picturesque…

Less than another hour brought us to our destination… Payrac. A renovated blacksmith’s forge. Very different from the converted barn we had been in but equally comfortable, well appointed and a home from home. Now for some vino, Monopoly Deal and chill…
