I promised to update on our visits to Josselin, La Gacilly and the resistance museum at Saint Marcel when we got home and it has been very remiss of me not to do it. Here is a quick summary before we set off on another adventure!
Josselin lies in the Breton heartland and is dominated by a medieval castle where members of the Rohen family still live. The main hub of activity is found in the town square next to the Gothic Basilica Notre Dame du Concierge. The town has its fair share of medieval half timbered houses and the Nantes-Brest canal runs through it.

La Gacilly – now what a find this little place was. The home base of the world wide cosmetic business Yves Rocher, La Gacilly sits on the Aff River between Vannes and Rennes. Each year it hosts a photographic festival – photographs are displayed throughout the village in various sizes and locations based on a theme from early June until late September. This year the theme was People’s and Nature. We had a lovely day wandering around admiring some amazing work and reading some very moving stories.

Resistance museum at Saint Marcel
The museum of the Breton Resistance is built on the location of a memorable battle on June 18th 1944 between the allies and the German’s. The displays tell the story of the battle and the resistance in Brittany in general together with an exhibition on the French Paratroopers. Life size reconstructions of streets take you to the heart of war time France.

We have also enjoyed some lovely days at Melmore in Donegal as well as 10 days in England catching up with friends in Halifax, Buckinghamshire and Essex; a wonderful trip out of Harwich to see a seal colony and an amazing performance of Cats by the Lorraine George School of Performing Arts!
