Leaving home in sunshine we had a pleasant drive to Dublin Ferry port taking in the scenic route round Howth peninsula! We generally travel the Cairnryan route so it was interesting leaving Dublin port and seeing the points of interest, especially the Kish Bank Lighthouse which had us googling the history etc of the light….

We stayed over in a good old Premier Inn at Conwy North Wales on Thursday evening hopeful of a pleasant journey down through the beautiful Welsh countryside on Friday…. how disappointed were we. It didn’t take time to rain and we abandoned our plan after a couple of hours and headed towards the M5!
All that protected landscape will have to be revisited.
We had a lovely stop in Titchfield and coffee with Nelson, haven’t seen him in nearly 40 years, before our arrival with Karen and Campbell.
Saturday dawned grey and chilly, so much for the shorts! It didn’t stop the sightseeing however, as we visited Wave – Poppies, a sculpture from the installation ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ originally at the Tower of London in 2014 by artist Paul Cummins, at Fort Nelson.
Fort Nelson is a fully restored Victorian fort on top of Portsdown Hill overlooking the Solent with 19 acres of ramparts, fortifications, secret underground tunnels, ammunition bunkers and interactive displays. Well worth a visit. royalarmouries.org/venue/fort-nelson/

Sunday we supported Campbell and local rugby at Gosport and Fareham RFC. When the stand got too cold we took a stroll along the adjacent Alger Creek, enjoying the scenery and local wildlife!

This evening we off on a mini cruise…. Portsmouth to Bilbao!
