She bear off to the snow alone
I have been very fortunate over the last five years to spend time with a very special group of ladies skiing. This year there was a reconfiguration of the group as Lorraine and Elizabeth had committed to a fundraising ski challenge for the Rob George Foundation.
Lorr, Vivien (both from Essex), Seema (Halifax) and I were joined by Seema’s husband Ashwin, his cousin Sapna (London) and my friend Michelle from Northern Ireland.
The trip was to the very well appointed Chalet Cache in Morzine, France. The plan was that, with the exception of Lorr and Vivien who were due in Morzine in time for dinner, the rest of us would meet at Geneva Airport and travel to Morzine with plenty of time to find our ski legs and enjoy an afternoons skiing. The reality – Michelle and I got diverted to Lyon and were left to make our own way back to Geneva airport – a journey that included 3 trains, a lot of internet surfing and a resolve to learn the basics of French! Whilst we did meet Lorr and Vivien at the airport and waved them off to the chalet we managed to arrive there before them – 6½hrs later than we had planned.
Chalet Cache is owned and run by Jude and Tracy, two of the most charming and engaging hosts. Jude does all the running about after us, dropping off in the morning and bringing us, or just our skies, back in the evening. Tracy is the most amazing chef and delighted us with afternoon cakes, canapes and three course meals that would win any Great British Chef competition.

The weather on Monday and Tuesday wasn’t great but it didn’t stop us doing approximately 20km each day on the slopes of Porte de Soleil – Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets. Wednesday was glorious for our last day and we managed to navigate our way in to Switzerland and back! On our final run we enjoyed relaxing at the top of Super Morzine in the sunshine before returning to the chalet to chill in the hot tub!
I have really enjoyed the company of this group of ladies over the years and, whilst we did miss Lorraine and Elizabeth, this year was no exception. We caught up on family news, discussed what is good and needs repairing in our own lives and shared some funny stories and experiences, good wine and good food, some nights in the wee small hours!
